CommuniTech

FACT Client and Volunteer While the computer revolution has created many new ways of connecting people and services, some families are being left further and further behind due to the lack of knowledge and resources. CommuniTech is an initiative at MIT that attempts to bridge this Digital Divide -- the perceived gap between those who have access to the latest information technologies and those who do not. CommuniTech’s mission is two-fold. Through the MIT Used Computer Factory (UCF), it provides refurbished computers to underserved families. Through Families Accessing Computer Technology (FACT), it trains those families to become familiar and comfortable with computer technology.

Families Accessing Computer Technology (FACT)

Dates: October 10 - November 14, 2009, Saturdays
Times: 10:00am - 12:00pm

CommuniTech FACT gives MIT students the opportunity to work one-on-one with participants, allowing them to become part of the worldwide effort to help bridge the Digital Divide.

FACT volunteers train families in basic or advanced computer technology during six-week classes each semester. FACT families who complete the basic skills class receive computers from FACT's partner program, the MIT Used Computer Factory (UCF).

Used Computer Factory (UCF)

Dates: October 10 - November 14, 2009, Saturdays
Times: 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Location: Stata Center, 32-080

CommuniTech UCF allows MIT students to develop hands-on skills while learning about computer hardware and software. Volunteers also gain an understanding of Digital Divide issues and the ways in which they can use their knowledge and skills to reach out and help populations with limited access to technology.

If you want to learn to fix a computer or want to refurbish computers for a good cause, come be a part of the team! No previous computer refurbishment experience is necessary.

Computers are donated to families who have completed a training program with UCF's partner program, Families Accessing Computer Technology (FACT).
